Mental Health Clinicians | Far North QLD

Job No: RFDS377
Location: Cairns

Whenever and wherever people in Queensland need us the most, we’re there. That’s how it’s been for almost a century.

Join us and help us keep it that way.

About us:

The Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) has been providing Mental Health services across difficult to access parts of Far North Queensland since 2000.  Our Place-Based Services provide Mental Health support to people experiencing mild to moderate Mental Health concerns using the stepped care model funded by the NQPHN.  We proudly support the Northern Peninsula Area, Mapoon, Napranum, Weipa, Kowanyama, Pormpuraaw, Lockhart River, Laura, Wujal Wujal and Cooktown.

The Roles:

  • Full-time & Part-time (Contract funding until 30 June 2021).
  • Based at Cairns - Fly in/fly out to Northern Communities.
  • Adult Services focus.
  • Child and Youth Services focus.

Our Mental Health service in Far North Queensland is expanding which is creating new opportunities for experienced Mental Health Clinicians to join our well established multi-disciplinary team. You will develop and deliver culturally appropriate holistic services, whilst implementing a range of clinical evidence-based interventions.

You will provide professional clinical Mental Health services for a case load of people with mild to moderate mental illnesses, following an intake, triage, assessment and evidence-based treatment process.

Our current focus is on early intervention and we are expanding our support into Child and Youth Services.  If you have a keen interest in Child and Youth Mental Health, this is a unique opportunity to apply all your current skills, whilst learning new ones, in a challenging and highly rewarding environment. There are also positions available for clinicians to work with the Adult focus

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who wants to explore the communities of Far North Queensland.   Based in Cairns, we work on a two-week roster, four days on and three days off including a base day in Cairns once a fortnight.   You will work autonomously, with the freedom to apply your expertise and use your own creativity and innovation adapting to the needs of your clients and the greater community.

Who we are looking for?

We are looking for someone with the desire to work in remote Indigenous communities and the experience and confidence to work independently.  You will embrace the community members and the work whilst collaborating with other service providers to create a supportive network.

In addition, you will possess the following:

  • Tertiary Mental Health qualifications in Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy or Mental Health Nursing with the relevant registration or membership. (ie AASW or APHRA)
  • Experience in the delivery of psychological therapies through brief interventions, ongoing therapeutic counselling, case management and mental health education.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively within remote communities with an understanding of the health and wellbeing issues that impact those that reside there.
  • The capacity to work overnight in community for up to three nights per week.

There are three ‘must-haves’ that we look for in every employee of RFDS (Queensland Section). We want people who:

  1. Are passionate about providing the finest care to people in Queensland;
  2. Go above and beyond to drive a positive, cohesive team culture – helping each other to help others;
  3. Embrace the challenges our organisation faces - have the motivation to help us thrive in a competitive, commercial, KPI-driven environment.

Why join us?

In return for your skills, energy and commitment to our mission, we offer you the opportunity to make a real impact in Queensland communities and truly help others. You will be working with people who are passionate about our purpose and proud of their contribution to our iconic organisation.

As a valuable member of a passionate team driving RFDS service and care, you will come to work knowing that you and your colleagues are providing vital support to people in Queensland communities. Critically, you are also helping ensure our organisation is efficient, effective and sustainable now and in the future.

Your contribution will be rewarded with an attractive remuneration package plus salary packaging arrangements. We will support you in your endeavour to develop new skills in a close-knit team that encourages the sharing of ideas and knowledge.

Successful candidates will be subject to a Police Checks and Pre-employment Drug and Alcohol Testing.  Candidates are required to hold a current, unrestricted Australian Driver's Licence.  You will also be required to successfully complete the RFDS credentialing process which includes providing certified copies of qualifications/registrations and evidence of immunity or vaccination against VPD.
