Using the latest in aviation, medical and communications technology, it delivers extensive primary health care and 24-hour emergency service to those who live, work and travel Australia. The range of essential health care services includes general practice, Indigenous health, child and family health, social and emotional wellbeing, women’s health, health promotion activities and provides regular patient transfers for life-saving medical care.  

Today, the RFDS (Queensland Section) has nine bases across the state plus the Corporate Office, services an area of 1,727,200 sq. km, and provides care to more than 91,000 patients in the last year. With over 400 professional and dedicated staff spread across aviation, medical, nursing and support service disciplines, RFDS Queensland Section is a diverse and complex health service provider.

The RFDS (Queensland Section) is seeking expressions of interest from Medical Officers to join the organisation for potential future vacancies. 

As a Medical Officer with the Royal Flying Doctor Service (QLD Section), you will be responsible for caring for and coordinating the care of a broad range of patients, with the full range of medical conditions/presentations.   Our Medical Officers are highly skilled professionals who provide optimal care to people throughout remote and rural Queensland.  You will enjoy a challenging environment in which no two days are ever the same. You will be involved in general practice consultations, emergency management and evacuations, and telephone or video consultations, both from Base and within the communities we serve.    Medical Officers are employed in our RFDS Cairns, Charleville or Mount Isa Bases.

The two main services that the RFDS (QLD Section) provides are:

Primary Care Services (General practice, telehealth medicine, allied health, child health, health promotion including field days, indigenous health and mental health services)

Aeromedical Services (Primary responses and inter-hospital transfers)

When positions are available, they are offered on a permanent full-time, part-time and casual basis at our Cairns, Charleville or Mount Isa Bases.

We currently have vacancies available at our Mount Isa Base.

To achieve full Scope of Clinical Practice with the RFDS (QLD Section), it is essential that a Medical Officer has the following:

  • Qualifications in Medicine
  • General Registration or the ability to be registered as a Medical Practitioner with AHPRA (Medical Board of Australia) is essential
  • A minimum of five years post Fellowship
  • Fellowship in General Practice (RACGP or ACRRM)
  • Fellowship in a Critical Care Speciality (ACEM, ANZCA, CICM) may also be considered
  • General Practice or Primary Health Care experience
  • Emergency Experience 
  • Anaesthetic or ICU experience 
  • Basic Obstetric experience

Successful candidates will be subject to a Police Checks and Pre-employment Drug and Alcohol Testing.  Candidates are required to hold a current, unrestricted Australian Driver's Licence and obtain an ASIC Card.   

You will be required to successfully complete the RFDS credentialing process which includes providing certified copies of qualifications/registrations and evidence of immunity or vaccination against VPD.
